In an installation studio based on ‘light’, we were led to focus on ideas of ‘atmospheres’, ‘affects’ and ‘effects.’ Further, that we might attempt to bridge the gap between an artificial scene created on a computer to the physical world and its laws.
Awe; Penitence; Serenity. The study began looking at the interiors of gothic churches, looking to their rose windows, stained glass, dramatic shadows and candlelight as inspiration.
By developing a flexible surface of painted PVC pipes, Christmas lights encapsulated in expandable spray foam, and red fabric, we were able to capture these attributes. The goal was to create a space that evokes emotions one experiences when entering into a gothic church, while adding feelings of beauty, danger, elegance, and movement that are found at a bull fight.
