Franklinton is a neighborhood just outside the heart of Columbus that is ripe for development—given its proximity to downtown and burgeoning art community, but it currently lacks a civic gravity that can ignite the district. Serving as a destination, the 500 West Broad Mixed-Use Development re-imagines the live-work-play concept by creating a campus that will include residential, office and retail tenants; and a rich program of amenities, including community gathering spaces and art display space.
This mix will help build an intimate, shared neighborhood for residents and office tenants by taking advantage of the spaces that exist between buildings for unexpected uses like a semi-private vegetative gardens and dedicated graffiti and mural walls. A similar strategy is being taken inside the buildings, as well, where nooks and crannies formed by the building’s angular shape will become bike storage or co-working space.
The design of this project was highly influenced by its context, taking into account the area’s artsy, eclectic and sometimes gritty vibe that is reflected in the shipping container cladding and the artistic facade.
